Abstract

In Kazakh linguistics, the concepts of functional grammar began to form and develop in the scientific-theoretical aspect at the end of the nineteenth century. Within the framework of the functional approach, research works, scholarly studies, terms, and new linguistic concepts emerged. However, one of the first scholars who presented scientifically substantiated propositions concerning the functional nature of the Kazakh language, in particular the functioning of verbal forms in context, was Akhmet Baitursynuly. In the present study, the scholar’s definitions and statements relating to the structure of the word are correlated with the concepts of functional grammar that have developed in contemporary linguistics and are examined on the basis of his examples and theoretical formulations. In addition, the principles of systematizing the grammar of the Kazakh language proposed by Akhmet Baitursynuly are analyzed. By correlating functional-semantic fields with the categories of voice and mood identified by the scholar, the researcher’s works are interpreted from a new perspective, which makes it possible to determine their conceptual orientation and fundamental theoretical principles.
